Roy Likins Culinary Scholarship was a lifelong member of the AWWA. He served as president of Palm Coast Utility Corporation for six years and serve utility in various capacities for 16 years. He is a leader in the water industry, serving as chairman of FW & PCOA Region 9 and the various state committees with primary focus on education and training. In 1972, she hosted the Florida Conference on Water Resources and later served as secretary / treasurer and chairman of Florida. In 1982, he received the prestigious AWWA George Warren Fuller award. RoyCulinary Scholarship also become a strong and active member of her community, serving on the Jaycees, Flagler County Shrine Club, as a member and chairman of School Board, and as treasurer and Chairman of United Way.

After his death in 1991 at age 53, of Florida and its service honoring his memory by naming a scholarship program which is owned by Roy W. Likins Scholarship.

This Culinary Scholarships thesis project is to build on an existing collaboration with Professor Mike Siva-Jothy of the University of Sheffield. Preparatory work has already been done to the function of the immune system in crickets and laboratory work the student is the basis for a proposal to grant NERC great shape and contribute to a proposal by the ERC to consider. Professor Tregenza currently leading a major project funded NERC followed a natural population of the crickets in a field in Spain (Rodriguez-Munoz et al. Science, 2009). By monitoring using SNP genotyping of all people and a wide range of video cameras, we know a lot about the lives of these insects, including how long they live, as in this fight, how often they mate, how many offspring they leave, etc. This Culinary Scholarships project will include monitoring the function of the immune system of crickets for the relationship between immune function and other features of life history view and combines this approach with field and laboratory experiments.

Entry requirements: A strong first degree (at least an Upper Second Class Honours or equivalent) in a relevant subject.

You will only be eligible for the full stipend of £13,590pa if you are from the UK or EU and have been resident in the UK or EU for a minimum of three years prior to application.

N.B. Preference will be given to those students writing their dissertations in the field of Art & Archaeology of the Near and Middle East. Project title
Biogeochemical fluxes of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous associated with suspended and sedimenting particulate organic matter in the Baltic Sea.

Project description
The Ph. D. student will do research on quantification of C, N, and P fluxes associated to cyanobacteria, other phytoplankton, detritus, and fecal pellets in the Baltic Sea. The research will be performed using new approaches combining camera systems (for in situ quantification of particle abundance and size spectra in the Baltic Sea), and sediment traps as well as by experimental approaches for determination of particle remineralization rate and sinking velocity as a function of particle source and size.

The PhD-student will have close collaboration with four other PhD-students and senior scientists at Stockholm University (Dept. of Systems Ecology, Dept. of Applied Envi-ronmental Science, and Dept. of Geological Sciences) working on related projects, which together aim to obtain a deeper understanding of nitrogen fluxes and fate of fixed nitrogen in the Baltic Sea.

Applications will be assessed based on the following criteria

A PhD position lasts four years and is a full time position. After successful defence of the licentiate, the student will be employed within a PhD position (“doktorandanställning”). Scholarship 2011 PhD candidate in (Cognitive) Neuroscience

It is still largely a mystery how collections of neurons give rise to conscious perception. By now we have some idea of the brain systems involved, but the neural mechanisms and ensemble interactions correlated to perception remain unresolved. In the current project we will investigate how neural ensembles in multiple brain areas respond to visual images, and which types of transmitter receptor in these areas are important for perceptual discrimination. Specifically, we will focus on the interaction between sensory and memory systems in this project. To this end, we will apply multi-area ensemble recordings combined with neuroopharmacology in freely behaving rodents. At a later stage of the project, results will be used to design new computational models of perceptual discrimination. The project will be conducted as part of the UvA's research priority program Brain and Cognition, in a multidisciplinary collaboration combining psychological, neurobiological, neuroimaging and image-processing research (see www.csca.nl).

Scholars are invited by the Kennedy Library to apply for the Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. Research Fellowships. These fellowships are administered by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation from income provided by the Schlesinger Fund.

Schlesinger Fellowships carry a stipend of up to $5,000, which may be awarded to a single individual or divided between two recipients. They are intended to support scholars in the production of substantial works on the foreign policy of the Kennedy years, especially with regard to the western hemisphere, or on Kennedy domestic policy, especially with regard to racial justice and to the conservation of natural resources.

Successful candidates will develop at least a portion of their work from original research in archival materials from the collections of the Kennedy Library and related materials. The Queen's University Terry Fox Foundation Training Program in Transdisciplinary Cancer Research in partnership with CIHR was established to produce future leaders in translational cancer research in Canada. This program provides young investigators, including graduate students, post PhD and post MD fellows, with training and hands-on experience in transdisciplinary research while broadening their perspective on the cancer problem. One project aims to establish novel models to investigate the links between chromosome instability and tumour evolution, while the second project aims to decode the molecular networks linking mitotic arrest and cell death.

Artemisinin is a herb used to treat Malaria. Currently there are no exact extraction procedures and many people use different conditions to obtain the active material. As a result the process has not been optimised and the quality and yields of the extracts vary tremendously. For artemisinin to be an effective treatment for malaria it must be produced in in reasonable amounts of high quality, and for this process to be effective it must be optimised.

This project involves the examination of the extraction of artemisia and quantification of the yields produced. Extraction using conventional extraction techniques will be compared to enhanced extraction using ultrasound. The quality of the extracts will be monitored after the extraction process and the process will be optimised in terms of extraction solvent, temperature, extraction time and ultrasonic frequency employed.

The ideal candidate will have BSc Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology or Biological Sciences (minimum 2:1) with a laboratory based final year project. Some experience of working with natural products and extraction.

Project Name: New Languages seen with new eyes: The evidence for the emergence of grammar in sign language (SL) with new methods and technologies

Project description: The project aims to develop a body of SL Australian (Auslan), and use British SL (BSL) to gather evidence for his claim that grammar is an emerging feature of the language to collect the frequency and the LED is to support the use. The theoretical framework can be generally defined as "functional grammar-cognitive construction based application. The aim is to explain how the grammar of language acquisition, focusing on its role in sign language variation and change in visual mode Using Auslan / BSL as a case study. It is a priority to be used for the construction of one or more characters to Action Express completed.

Multiple sign constructions will also be examined for evidence for grammatical relations in Auslan/BSL. The hypothesis is that some variation in the form and use of particular signs and constructions in the corpus reflects different degrees of grammaticalisation in subgroups of Auslan/BSL users (e.g., signers in different age cohorts or regions). This corpus-based project is designed to test this hypothesis. The research also aims test early descriptions of Auslan/BSL that were made without the benefit of corpora. The project aims to exploit innovative corpus methodologies (e.g. ID-glossing) and technologies (e.g. the ELAN multi-media annotation software). The project is funded by the Australian Research Council and will run for 4 years (2010-2013).

In addition to completing the requirements of the ARC funded project, the PhD project can be tailored to suit the particular research interests of the candidate, but must use the Auslan/BSL corpus dataset. In doing this the candidate will work closely with a deaf Research Associate and another deaf PhD candidate who, together, will be primarily responsible for creating and validating annotations. The candidate must be prepared to learn how to use ELAN to a high level of proficiency in order to search and query the corpus.

Eligible Candidates

The candidate must have an undergraduate degree with a major in linguistics, a good knowledge of a SL (preferably Auslan or BSL, but this is not essential), and excellent English skills. The candidate must be prepared to learn Auslan/BSL to a basic conversational level during their candidature if they are not already familiar with it at the time of enrolment. A co-tutelle enrolment may be considered for a suitably qualified international candidate, but the majority of the candidature must be spent at Macquarie University.

Postdoc position in superconducting quantum information - Decoherence processes in superconducting circuits. We seek a motivated postdoctoral researcher to be part of the experimental effort at Chalmers University of Technology

The position is in the Quantum Device Physics Laboratory, MC2 at Chalmers. The project will be carried out by the prospective applicant, along with several experimental PhD students. This team will also be supported by senior researchers and professors working on the project, including both experimentalists and theoreticians. The work will take place in a strong research environment at Chalmers, supported by the Linnaeus Center of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems and the new Chalmers Nanotechnology Center. Chalmers is also the coordinating node in several EU projects on quantum computing including EuroSQIP and SOLID. This project is part of a larger international effort, coordinated from the US and will allow opportunities for travel and collaboration.

Job description

Quantum computation and quantum information processing have emerged as exciting new fields of physics in the last decade. While offering the promise of radical new technologies in the future, these fields are driving our basic understanding of quantum mechanics and its implications. These fields have become increasingly interdisciplinary in recent years, drawing in physicists from a variety of disciplines, ranging from quantum optics to condensed matter physics. Early work was dominated by results in natural quantum systems, such as photons and atoms. Recently, work on engineered quantum systems, i.e. solid-state devices, has become increasingly important.

A particularly important contribution to this work has come from the field of superconducting quantum circuits. From the first experiments a decade ago, the performance of superconducting quantum bits (qubits) has improved as much as 3 orders of magnitude. Early advances were gained through improved designs of the qubits and measurement systems. While this approach may continue to be fruitful, it is also general recognized in the field that there is a lack of understanding of the microscopic mechanisms that limit the performance of superconducting qubits. There is now a major international effort to understand these mechanisms and eliminate them through advancements in our physical understanding, but also through technological advancements in materials and fabrication methods.

Decoherence processes in superconducting circuits

At the heart of all superconducting qubits is the Josephson junction. Studied for many decades as a macroscopic object, it is only in the last 15 years that a microscopic understanding of the Josephson effect has developed in terms of Andreev bound states. In mesoscopic Josephson links, the theory of Andreev states has been confirmed with impressive accuracy. It is also generally accepted that the macroscopic Josephson current in a Josephson junction is actually carried by a multitude of ABSs. Despite its success, this microscopic picture of Josephson junctions has not yet been integrated into our understanding of superconducting qubits. While conventional theory generally treats the Josephson junction as “dissipationless,” Andreev theory tells us that this is not the case, even for an ideal device. In the presence of imperfections, there are many paths by which ABSs can lead to decoherence. In particular, nonequilibrium quasiparticles, which are ubiquitous ly observed in superconducting qubits, interact very strongly with ABSs in ways that can produce both relaxation and dephasing. Inhomogeneities and defects in the tunnel barrier can also transform ABSs into parasitic two level systems, which are known to degrade the performance of qubits in a variety of ways. It is critical to understand the intrinsic and fundamental limits that Andreev physics place on the performance of superconducting qubits.

The position is available to start immediately. The actually starting time is negotiable. The project has long term funding, renewable for up to 4-5 years. However, standard postdoc contracts at Chalmers are for 1 year at a time.

We will start to interview qualified applicants after January 18, 2010. A candidate maybe chosen at anytime after that, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Goals for the project include:

Elucidate and clarify the ways in which Andreev bound states, by themselves and in conjunction with imperfections, limit the performance of superconducting qubits.

Quantify the decoherence arising from ABS interacting with nonequilibrium quasiparticles and imperfections in the tunnel barrier.

Develop and implement strategies for eliminating nonequilibrium quasiparticles.
Develop and implement advanced electrical measurements, derived from Andreev physics, that will provide information on the microscopic functionality of Josephson junctions.

Use this information to develop an advanced fabrication process for deep-submicron Josephson junctions that reduces or eliminates sources of decoherence.

Integrate all of this into advanced qubits and demonstrate enhanced coherence times.

Required qualifications

The successful applicant should have (or be nearing completion of) a PhD in a field of condensed matter physics. Candidates should have experience in at least some of the following areas: quantum mechanics, superconductivity, quantum optics, mesoscopic physics, nanofabrication, cryogenics, microwave technology. Fluency in written and spoken English is also a requirement.
